A fire extinguisher is one of those pieces of equipment everyone assumes is fine until the moment it isn't. Under IS 15683 — the Indian Standard governing portable fire extinguishers — there's a fairly clear rhythm to keeping one genuinely ready, and it's simpler than most people expect once it's broken into its three parts: checking, servicing, and testing.

Monthly: a two-minute visual check

This is the check anyone on site can do without training. Look at:

  • The pressure gauge — the needle should sit in the green zone, not the red.
  • The safety pin and tamper seal — both should be intact and unbroken.
  • The hose and nozzle — check for cracks, blockages, or visible wear.
  • The cylinder body — look for dents, corrosion, or leaking residue.
  • Accessibility — make sure nothing is blocking access to it.

If anything looks off, that extinguisher needs professional attention immediately rather than waiting for the next scheduled service.

Annually: professional service and refill

Once a year, a trained technician should open, inspect, and recharge the extinguisher — checking the internal condition of the cylinder, the mechanical parts, and replacing the extinguishing agent even if it was never used. This is also when a technician will catch problems a visual check can't, like internal corrosion or a valve that's starting to stick.

Periodically: hydrostatic testing

Every extinguisher cylinder has a manufacturer- and standard-specified interval at which it needs a hydrostatic pressure test — a check that the cylinder itself can still safely hold pressure, done at longer intervals than the annual service. This is a legal and safety requirement, not an optional upsell, and a cylinder that fails this test needs to be taken out of service.

Immediately: after any use

Even a partial discharge — testing it, or using it briefly on a small fire — means the extinguisher needs to be refilled or replaced before it goes back into service. A partially discharged cylinder is not "still mostly full and fine for now."

A quick note on extinguisher type

CO2 extinguishers are checked slightly differently from ABC or water/foam types — because CO2 doesn't register meaningfully on a standard pressure gauge, technicians typically verify charge level by weighing the cylinder against its stamped full weight, rather than reading a gauge. This is one of several reasons it's worth having a professional service every type rather than assuming one inspection method covers all of them.

Signs an extinguisher needs attention right now

  • The pressure gauge needle is in the red.
  • The tamper seal is broken but no one recalls using it.
  • Visible rust, dents, or leaking powder/foam residue.
  • It's past its due date for annual service or hydrostatic testing.
