What is a fire hydrant system?
A fire hydrant system delivers water at high pressure and volume through external yard hydrants and internal landing valves on each floor, fed by a pump house with a main pump, jockey pump, and usually a standby diesel pump. It's a manual system — someone has to connect a hose and open a valve — and it's generally sized for trained personnel or the fire service to fight a developed fire, not for an untrained occupant's first reaction.
What is a fire sprinkler system?
A sprinkler system is automatic. Individual sprinkler heads are triggered by heat at the point of the fire — not by smoke, and not by a central alarm — releasing water only where it's needed, which is why a fire in one corner of a floor doesn't set off every sprinkler head in the building. It's fed by the same category of pump house as a hydrant system, but the network and head layout are designed around ceiling coverage rather than hose reach.

Which one does your building actually need?
